Global Health Stories

HEARTT.  Health Education and Relief Through Teaching.  Started about six years ago, HEARTT bringing doctors from the U.S. and Europe to Liberia to treat patients but also to help train the up and coming generation of Liberia doctors.  An almost 25-year war ended in 2003, but it left the country ravaged and one of the many victims was the medical system.  Liberia found itself with an incredible shortage of doctors.  The hospital where HEARTT works had employed close to 200 physicians before the war, and after there were roughly a dozen.  The population went nearly untreated throughout the war and now is not only in dire need of care but also of doctors to treat the sick.

In an effort to help the country be able to care for itself, HEARTT does not just treat the sick, they teach medical students and help the current small group of Liberia doctors improve their skills, while learning about disease and conditions not often seen in the U.S.
